Adult Fitness After Forty (And Why It Looks Nothing Like Your Twenties)

If you trained hard in your twenties and stopped, you can come back. But the program has to be different, the recovery has to be longer, and the goals have to be honest. Here's how we coach adults at The Farm.

Half of the adults I work with at The Farm were strong, fit, capable people in their twenties. And then life happened. Career, kids, mortgage. They wake up at 45 and realize they haven’t done a squat since George W. Bush was in office.

Here’s the honest message: you can come back. Most of you faster than you think. But the training you did in your twenties will hurt you in your forties. The program has to change.

What changes

Recovery slows down. A 22-year-old can squat heavy on Monday and play soccer on Tuesday. A 45-year-old can’t. The volume has to drop. The intensity has to be smarter. The off-days have to be real.

Joints accumulate stories. That old knee surgery, the shoulder tweak from softball league, the back that’s been bothering you for a year: they’re real, and the program has to respect them. Not avoid training. Train around them, train into them, but never train through them.

Sleep matters more. I won’t lecture you about sleep. You already know. I’ll just say: the program assumes you’re sleeping. If you’re not, the program won’t work.

Strength still matters most. Cardio is great. Mobility work is great. But the single biggest predictor of how you’ll feel at 70 is how strong you are at 50. We prioritize strength. Always.

What our adult program looks like

Each session at The Farm is about an hour. Strength is the centerpiece. We add conditioning, mobility, and small bits of accessory work depending on what the body needs that day.

We don’t run marathon-style classes. We don’t do random workouts of the day. We program. Every week, every cycle, in the direction of where you want to be in 12 months.

“The goal isn’t to feel destroyed at the end of every session. The goal is to feel better at the end of every season.”

What we don’t do

  • We don’t prescribe meal plans. We offer guidance when asked.
  • We don’t sell supplements. We’re not getting commission on protein powder.
  • We don’t post your before/after photos. You’re not a transformation reel.
  • We don’t compete with you. The only person on your scoreboard is yourself last month.

Who this works for

It works for parents of our athletes. Most of them join after watching their kid get strong and thinking “huh, I’d like that too.” It works for working professionals who need an hour that resets their day. It works for adults coming back from injury or surgery. It works for anyone who’s done with influencer fitness and just wants real coaching.

If that’s you, come in for a free consult. First conversation is just a conversation. We’ll figure out if we’re the right fit.
